In Memoriam: Professor Mark A. Shannon

Professor Mark A. Shannon, an affiliate faculty member with the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, passed away on Sunday, October 14. He was 56 years old.

Shannon also was the Bayne Professor of Mechanical Science and Engineering. For more than a year, Professor Shannon had been battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. He joined the University of Illinois in 1994 as a faculty member.

ChBE Department Head Paul Kenis remembered Professor Shannon with this statement. “Mark was a collaborator, mentor, and friend for many of us in ChBE, Chemistry, and the School of Chemical Sciences over the years. He was a tireless source of inspiration for many of us, and his vision and ideas helped Illinois compete successfully for several large centers. We will miss him dearly. Our condolences go to his wife, Mona, and his family.”
