The general education requirement in chemical engineering is for 16 semester hours of approved electives, which must be distributed as described below. Following requirements are for students who entered college Fall 2002 or later. Certain exceptions apply for students depending on the entering date. Students who take all required courses for chemical engineering and who fulfill the elective requirements listed below will automatically satisfy all college and campus general education requirements.
Categories A, B, and C each have a required number of semester hours. Credit hours used in one category cannot be counted toward another category. Category D is a distribution requirement only.
Category A - Social and Behavioral Science (6 hrs)
You must take 6 hours of approved courses. Approved courses include any courses from the campus-wide approved lists for Social Perspectives or Behavioral Sciences.
Category B - Humanities and the Arts (6 hrs)
You must take 6 hours of approved courses. Approved courses include any courses from the campus-wide approved lists for Literature and the Arts or Historical and Philosophical Perspectives.
Category C - Additional Courses (4 hrs)
You must take an additional 4 hours of approved courses to reach a total of 16 hours. Approved courses include any courses from the campus-wide General Education approved lists cited in Categories A or B. You may use a foreign language course in this category so long as you began college Spring 2008 or earlier and you follow the guidelines stated in the “Approved Foreign Language Requirements” document.
Category D - Western and Non-Western Cultures (distribution requirement)
Credit hours used for the requirements in the first three categories may also be used to satisfy the distribution requirement of Category D.
