ChBE student receives excellence award to AIChE conference

Erica Peterson received a 2012 Donald F. Othmer Sophomore Academic Excellence Award to attend this year’s American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) annual student conference October 26 to 29 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Peterson, who is a junior in Chemical Engineering and the external vice president of the University of Illinois’ AIChE student chapter, said she is honored to receive the award.

“AIChE is a group that I am very involved in and love to be a part of each year,” she said. “Staying involved in AIChE for all four years will help expose other students and myself to the different career paths that chemical engineers can take.”

As an award recipient, Peterson will attend the national conference, meet student members from across the country, and enhance her leadership skills. “I will learn how other AIChE chapters operate and hopefully implement new ideas within the Illinois AIChE chapter,” she said.

The excellence award is given to students who have maintained the highest scholastic standing in their student chapter during their freshmen and sophomore years.

Peterson said being a member of AIChE will help her continue to shape her career goals. “I would like to work in a manufacturing plant for a large foods company, she said. “And, I am interested in earning my MBA.”
