Chemical and biomolecular engineering graduate student Bidipta Ghosh has received a Stoesser Lecture Poster Session Award from the Department of Chemistry. The Stoesser Lecture in Chemistry is held in honor of Dr. Sylvia Stoesser, an early pioneer for women in chemistry. The annual event includes a lecture given by an individual that is making outstanding contributions to science outside of academia, and a student poster session and awards ceremony.

Ghosh presented her research on designing new oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts for green hydrogen production, with a keen emphasis on defect engineering to enhance catalytic activity and durability in proton exchange membrane electrolyzer. According to Ghosh, this work addresses key challenges in renewable energy technologies, advancing the production of clean hydrogen and reducing environmental impact by decreasing reliance on fossil fuels. The National Science Foundation funded this research.

Ghosh is a member of the Hong Yang Research Group, and together they collaborated with Nicola Perry from Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and Andreas Klein from TU Darmstadt, Germany, to conduct crucial characterizations highlighted in their research.

Ghosh earned a bachelor’s degree from the National Institute of Technology Durgapur (2020). She started at Illinois in the fall of 2021, where her research focuses on the design and synthesis of nanostructured materials tailored for catalytic applications in renewable energy.
