About Our Department

Undergraduate Program

A hallmark of the undergraduate experience is an early emphasis on design projects and exposure to process safety. As a result, students become adept at working in teams and solving complex problems. Our students are also highly engaged, participating in researach and educational outreach and working in internships and co-ops. Many accept full-time positions with the company with which they held co-ops or internships.

Graduate Program

Our PhD students come to Illinois from around the world and are involved in high-impact research under the guidance of our accomplished and ambitious faculty. They work across disciplines on fundamental and applied problems. Many also pursue training in non-technical skills, including business, finance, and entrepreneurship. After graduation, they become leaders in academia and industry.

Faculty Expertise

Known around the world for innovation, our faculty conduct experimental and computational research. We partner with industry on material transfer agreements, consulting, sponsored research, technical advising, and more. Corporate partners have access to well-equipped and expertly staffed facilities such as the Materials Research Laboratory, Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology, and Beckman Institute.
