Chemical and biomolecular engineering professor Xiao Su was selected by the Department of Energy (DOE) for the 2024 Early Career Research Program (ECRP). The ECRP furthers the nation’s scientific community through the support of exceptional researchers at a formative time of their careers. The DOE’s Office of Basic Energy Sciences selected Su for his research on continuous redox-mediated electrochemical separations for critical element recovery.
Su joined the faculty at Illinois in 2019, where he researches the fundamental science and engineering of electrochemical interfaces, with a focus on molecularly selective separations, functional materials discovery, and process intensification. Among his honors, Su has received the National Science Foundation CAREER Award (2019), the American Chemical Society (ACS) Victor K. Lamer Award (2020), the International Society of Electrochemistry Elsevier Prize for Green Electrochemistry (2021), the ACS Unilever Award (2023), and the American Institute of Chemical Engineering Fractional Research Inc./John G. Kunesh Award (2023).
Su was selected with 90 other early career scientists across the country who together received $138 million in research funding. The list of awardees can be found here: https://science.osti.gov/early-career
