University of Illinois Chancellor Phyllis Wise has honored Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Lecturer Jerrod Henderson with a 2014-2015 Campus Award for Excellence in Public Engagement, which celebrates faculty and staff for their extraordinary contributions in connecting the university with the broader community on issues of critical social impact.
Dr. Henderson was recognized for his efforts to increase the number of students from underrepresented groups who pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math. Dr. Henderson coordinates the chemical engineering section of the Girls’ Adventures in Mathematics, Engineering, and Science (GAMES) Camp, which provides talented high school girls with an opportunity to explore engineering and scientific fields and encourages them to pursue STEM degrees after high school. He also developed the St. Elmo Brady STEM Academy, which aims to promote interest in STEM for underrepresented fourth and fifth grade students and their families through hands-on lab experience, inquiry-based science learning modules, and mentoring.
Dr. Henderson joined the department in 2010 and has an M.S./Ph.D. from the University of Illinois.
He and his fellow award recipients will be celebrated at a reception at the Beckman Institute next month.
