John Georges Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Scholarship
This scholarship was made possible by John A. Georges. Georges led International Paper with lasting impact, serving as President and COO from 1981 to 1984 and as CEO and Chairman from 1984 until 1996, when he retired. During his tenure, the company became a global leader in forest and paper products, with a market value that rose nearly 800 percent. Georges also held prominent national roles, including Director of the New York Stock Exchange (1987–1993) and Director of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (1986–1992). President George Bush appointed him to the President’s Council on Environmental Quality in 1992 and to the Advisory Committee on Trade Policy and Negotiations in 1993. Georges earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois in 1951 and an MBA from Drexel University. He is a member of The Grainger College of Engineering Hall of Fame.
