Professor and director of graduate studies Charles E. Sing has been named the James M. and Karen S. Morris Faculty Scholar. This Faculty Scholar position was established through a gift from alumnus James M. Morris (BS 81) and his wife, Karen.
Sing earned a B.S.E. (2008) and M.S. (2009) from Case Western Reserve University, Ph.D. (2012) from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and completed his postdoctoral work at Northwestern University (2012-2014). Sing joined the department in 2014, where his research focuses on charged polymers, polymer dynamics and biophysics. His research group seeks to use coarse-grained models to understand the emergent physics of polymer or biophysical systems, and then use the resulting insights to guide the design of new materials. Recently, Sing received the John H. Dillon Medal and was named as the director of graduate studies.
James M. Morris is retired chief facilities engineer for ExxonMobil. He has worked on projects throughout the Gulf Coast and worldwide, including offshore production operations in Nigeria and a liquefied natural gas project in Qatar. He is the consultant for the new Master of Engineering in Chemical Engineering Leadership program. The Morris’ have also established an undergraduate scholarship, the Donald and Dolores Morris Scholarship, to honor the memory of James’ parents, whose dream was for their children to go to college.
